Unfortunately, scammers lurk in every industry and the number of victims has increased due to economic downturn. While many f these scams deal with mortgage and real estate fraud, home owners are experiencing scam artists exploiting home improvement and repair needs.
Handymen more often than not victimize elderly homeowners. Social engineers gain the trust of elderly women and men alike. A charming man offering a service for rock bottom can easily offer to do basic task such as mowing the lawn, cleaning the pool, raking leaves, or cleaning gutters. These scammers may present themselves as trustworthy at first by actually performing the job the first time, but then take advantage of a homeowner later on down the line.
One of the oldest tricks in the book is for a fraudulent handyman to spot a potential problem and give a price break on labor to get their hands on the money that it costs to fix the problem. This can be money given for expensive materials such as pipes.
Elderly homeowners aren't the only homeowners who can be fooled. Anyone can be exposed to the nefarious tactics that scammers employ. But, knowing what to look for can save homeowners time and money. If a deal sounds too good to be true, chances are it is.
Door to door solicitation: Workers that go door to door offering their services are usually a waste of time. Real handymen don't use the tactic of children (selling cookies and other fundraising items). Reputable businesses can be found in the phone book, on online directories or in advertisements. In addition these men may have other plans as well; they may be casing your place to look at what valuable items you may have in your home or worse a rapist of killer. You should never allow a door to door salesman in your home unless he is verified.
Help me, Help me err…I mean you: These men gain your trust only to take advantage of you at a later date. His business card has a number that isn't in service or always goes to voice mail. His office is an abandoned building on the other side of town. Now you are out of money and didn't receive any services.
Can you pay me upfront?: This is the smoking gun. While some companies do require a deposit, that is usually exactly what it is, a deposit. A reasonable deposit should not exceed 20-35 percent of the total cost for repairs. It is expected that if a handyman service is doing specialized work that some sort of deposit is required but nothing that is overly expensive.
Never pay up front. Setting up a payment plan throughout the duration of the service with help motivate the handyman to finish the project.
Avoiding these scams are simple if homeowner know what to look for. Contacting your states Better Business Bureau can give you valuable information on businesses and what other consumers have to say about them. Doing your research before committing to a project alleviates the stress of dealing with distrustful handymen. Referrals from family and friends are also great ways to find quality handymen who are there to help you not scam you.
